AFFU being flagged-off at National Council of Sports - on De

Our Mission

In late 2019, the American Football Federation of Uganda (AFFU) was formally registered with the National Council of Sports (NCS), a major step in promoting the sport locally. On December 17 - 19, 2019, the team also participated in and won by Kenyan Team in the East African Flag Football Championship held in Kenya. Key Events and Details

  • Official Registration: The AFFU secured official recognition and registration from the National Council of Sports in 2019, which affiliated the federation internationally with the International Federation of American Football (IFAF). This move allowed the AFFU to operate as the national body for American football in Uganda.
  • Regional Competition: In December 2019, the Ugandan American football team competed in the inaugural East African Flag Football Championship in Kenya while represented by Kyambogo University, where they emerged victorious, defeating the host nation in the finals. The event took place from December 17th to 18th, 2019.
  • Future IFAF Competitions: The AFFU's efforts were part of a long-term plan to compete on a wider continental stage. This culminated in the Uganda men's national flag football team's participation in the historic first-ever IFAF Africa Flag Championship in Cairo, Egypt, in June 2025. This championship served as a qualifier for the 2026 IFAF Flag Football World Championships.

The 2019 activities marked significant milestones in the development of American football in Uganda, providing a foundation for future international participation.

Player Safety

Players have shown great promise in regional competitions.

“We are in flag football, whereby these players need to first understand the routes they are running, the formation they are installing within the game. Whether defense or offense or running backward receiver. But when you look at the players, the way they catch, they are good, only that they lack some facilities that we use in these techniques,” Ssumujju said on 17th Februa 2020
